Fantasy Golf: The Memorial Preview

Woe be the poor sucker who casually mentions Monday's NCAA lacrosse championship game to me with no appreciation for the rabbit hole that he/she has unwittingly decided to enter. You either watched it or you didn't and I will not judge because, despite the westward/southward expansion of the sport from its Maryland/New York roots, the final four of Duke, North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia was still more provincial than an Australian Rules Football game.

But if you did watch it, holy shit did you witness what had to be one of the greatest title games of all-time in any sport. And suffice it to say that I have opinions. Especially since my team lost. I will not chase down every one of them here but . . .
  • I can't fathom why Bernhardt didn't have the ball in his stick more unless he was hurt.
  • The jawing between the coaches was sweet music for those of us who never hesitated to let another coach know that he was acting like a jackass.
  • Why didn't Maryland chuck the ball out of bounds and start the EMO with more time on the clock at the end? (I stole that one from a guy on Twitter).
  • Virginia shot the ball like the best gunslinger in the west and Maryland did not. That movie ends the same way every time.

TWEET OF THE WEEK

Merging the lacrosse theme with this website's supposed theme we pay tribute to the Duke lacrosse moms who predictably ruined the quarterfinal viewing experience by shrieking directly into the telecast's on-field microphone for two straight hours (honorable mention to the dumbass who placed it within their range). The only thing Duke lacrosse moms like doing more than donning white jeans, drinking two glasses of Pinot Grigio and yelling sports gibberish at their kids is documenting and reporting homeowner's association violations.

GOLF ANALYSIS FOR THOSE ACTUALLY STILL READING

The Memorial has arguably the most consistently impressive roster of champions since Roger "Hollow Leg" Maltbie won the first one in 1976. Tiger Woods, Jack Niclaus, Tom Watson, Hale Irwin and Greg Norman have each won it multiple times and we're currently on a run of Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau plus Collin Morikawa in a playoff over Justin Thomas if you count last year's Workday Charity Open (which I do).

My gut tells me this year's winner is coming from the $7,500 - $8,500 range but for now I'm penciling-in Cantlay with Thomas as the alternate. I may, however, pull a bait and switch with Rickie Fowler or Matthew Wallace. That normally goes against every superstitious bone in my body (and by that I mean every bone in my body) but it worked at the PGA Championship where I swapped-out Rahm for Louis Oosthuizen and now I'm intrigued. Very intrigued.

For the record I'm going to pick Talor Gooch every week until he wins. Even in the weeks he's not playing. The guy keeps making cuts and plays some of his best golf against tough fields as evidenced by a T5 at The Players (where I didn't recommend him) and a T12 at the Genesis Invitational. He's either going to breakthrough or break me. Only time will tell.

One and Done Pick: Patrick Cantlay
That hand on your back belongs
to all of us. COME ON RICKIE!!!

Other Guy I'd Pick: Justin Thomas

Sleeper Pick: Talor Gooch

THE DUKE SUCKS HISTORICAL PERFORMANCE CHART

As alluded to above, they played back-to-back events at Muirfield last year so I've included the Workday Charity Open results. As also alluded to above, there are a lot of top tens in that mid-range group. Take notice and pay heed my friends.
