Fantasy Golf: The Honda Classic Preview

When the guy you picked to win last week opens his first nine holes with a double bogey and closes it with a quad, there are very few places to go but up. I still feel a bit blindsided as Rory came into the tournament riding a T6 and a T10. Little did we know that those results were smoke and mirrors hiding a demonic hook that was lurking beneath the surface. 

Rory would admit after his second round that he has recently attempted to add more clubhead speed in part after watching Bryson DeChambeau manhandle Winged Foot back in October. The result was that his swing got flatter and his quintessential draw turned into an occasional diabolical hook. And, as anyone who has ever battled the hook before can tell you . . .(shiver goes down my spine) . . . I'm sorry. Still not ready to talk about it. 

Would've been nice of Rory to mention that before he missed the cut by 12 shots. Anyway, there are two lessons here: (1) Learn to hit the fade kids, and (2) everything Bryson DeChambeau touches dies.

I usually just get back out of my car and start rummaging through my trunk but I like this option better . . . 

SUBLIMELY RIDICULOUS GOLF ANALYSIS 

Not a very inspiring field this week and my picks reflect that. Allow me to go on record right now as saying I could not have less confidence in them if they were my defiant 13 year old daughter eating chocolate ice cream while wearing a white sweatshirt. 

This tournament used to be fairly easy as you'd start with Rickie Fowler and then build from there but Rickie hasn't had a top ten finish since missing the cut here last year. During that stretch he's had just five top twenty finishes and nine missed cuts including last week at The Players when he posted a somewhat defeated looking 77-73. I hope he finds it again as he may not be the best player never to win a major but he's probably the most likeable . . . just edging-out Collin Montgomerie. 

Last week I abandoned Talor Gooch for the first time all year and he predictably finished T5th. Well I'm not making that mistake again and in fact I'm going to overcompensate and go all in on him over the likes of Sungjae Im, Daniel Berger and Adam Scott. This feels like a good week for some new blood as we have not had a first-time winner since Carlos Ortiz back in November which feels like 2017 in COVID years. 

The rest of the picks are about as chalky as you can get for this event which does not offer much in the way of multiple top ten finishers. At the bottom is the desperation pick of all desperation picks in Charl Schwartzel. His last four finishes are MC-MC-T62-MC but that's actually a good sign for him because he hasn't had a top five in two years that wasn't preceded by multiple missed cuts and or W/D's. And on that note, my daughter just wiped her hands on the couch.
