Fantasy Golf: Charles Schwab Challenge Preview

I can't speak for other generations but for mine, the outcomes of Sunday afternoon sporting events can be quite the emotional roundhouse. You either duck them or they catch you square in the jaw. Maybe that fucking 60 Minutes clock is to blame. If your team won on a fall Sunday in 1981, that cruel ticking would mercifully trigger just the mild despair of an impending school week. If, however, your team lost, you'd want to wrap your head with tinfoil and stick it in the microwave. 

Flash forward to a few days ago when I was having one of those Sundays that made me want to fly a blimp full of explosives into the Super Bowl. The Michael Block story helped to ease the angst and the ace was more than any of us could have imagined. However, no sooner did he get up and down for par on 18 to secure his spot in next year's PGA Championship than our attention was turned back to the leaders playing the 16th hole. 

On one side we had the effervescent and almost impossible not to like Viktor Hovland in search of his first major title. On the other we had brooding Brooks Koepka going for his fifth. For the record I used to root for Brooks. If nothing else, he was a foil for the clownish Bryson DeChambeau but now they're apparently LIVTour bros and Brooks revealed himself to be a petulant bore when featured on Netflix's Full Swing. At a minimum, he's a downer. 

Call me old-fashioned but I prefer athletes who at least pretend to like the sports they play. Koepka now exudes joylessness. Maybe I missed it as the camera tracked him after the round but the only player I saw congratulate him was Block who fittingly passed him walking in the opposite direction. Apparently not even Phil Mickelson could pull himself away from his latest sales pitch to give Brooksy a high five and DeChambeau must have gotten tangled-up in a shower curtain and missed the moment. 

So Sunday sucked but at least it wasn't Patrick Reed. Then again, Father's Day is just around the corner.

GOLF ANALYSIS

Unless you're feeling Spiethy, Tony Finau is the obvious pick this week. He's in that group of guys with Sam Burns and Sungjae Im who are just outside major consideration so find a course they historically play well and let them fly. Like a peacock.

Justin Rose and Cam Davis both had nice week's in Rochester and they've played well at Colonial so bet them with confidence. And let's face it, Brian Harman is just a goddamn bulldog that you want fighting for you this week. Oh hey, speaking of fighters, we round out the top ten with the law firm of Todd, Dahmen, Buckley and Block. Through your aches and pains, they will get you monetary gains.
