Fantasy Golf: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Preview

I'm still sitting here blinking incredulously at the 74's offered-up by Hideki Matsuyama on Friday and Xander Schauffele on Sunday. Those scores just don't compute from two of the most reliable players on a course that they both like. I hadn't felt that confident about anything since predicting the singularity of Lou Bega's greatest hits collection. I kind of feel like James Remar right after Nick Nolte shot him at the end of 48 Hours (oh hey spoiler alert). I simply don't believe it.

This may be contributing to the fact that it's noon on Wednesday and I'm trying to grind-out one of my favorite previews of the year because oh how I love me some AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am bashing. For past examples see here and here and um here. (Maybe you need to devote less time hating something so insignificant). Yeah right. Suffice it to say that with Chris Berman, Larry the Cable Guy and Gary Fucking Mule Deer all scheduled to play this year, it's going to be another veritable open air chuckle hut. At least we'll be spared the comedically constipated Peter Kostis.

TWEET OF THE WEEK

I have a couple of real political stingers but, in the interest of maintaining the pretense of the FGR being a big tent that welcomes all kinds, I'm going with this 46 seconds of pure feel good joy instead.

SLOWLY DETERIORATING EXPERT FANTASY GOLF ADVICE

I don't know if it's the shaky week I just had or the fact that it's springtime in February and I can't swing a golf club (because of the incident) but I have very little confidence in this week's picks. Without actually checking the history, I feel like every time I pick D.J. at Pebble Beach it's Phil's year and every time I pick Phil at Pebble Beach it's D.J.'s year and, in 2018 when they finished tied for 2nd, I probably picked Matt Kuchar.

So with that being said and for what it's worth, this feels like the right time to go all-in on D.J. He's coming off a long break in the fall (including the Presidents' Cup) and, since returning, he's finished T7 in Hawaii and T2 last week in Saudi Arabia. Hopefully we catch him while he's still engaged. You could make just as strong a case for Phil who finished T3rd in Saudi Arabia. Option 3 is Jason Day but we all know the risk that entails. It's like using your 2nd pick in a playground basketball game on the sharpshooting kid who has asthma.

There are some intriguing mid-range options with guys like Scott Piercy, Kevin Na and Kevin Streelman, all of whom have had some measure of success here even if you look at them and reflexively go "eh". From there it gets really tough. Brian Gay and Nick Taylor look appealing from past finishes but they've both been playing like crap lately. So for sleepers I'm going with Chesson Hadley because if I keep picking him every week, he's bound to come through eventually (right?) and Keith Mitchell because he finished T16th last week. To quote another buddy cop movie . . . "pretty thin huh?" . . . "anorexic." (File under movie lines you couldn't get away with today).

Brace yourself for four days of Ian Baker-Finch
verbally masturbating to this landscape.
One and Done Pick: Dustin Johnson

Other Guy I'd Pick: Phil Mickelson

Sleeper Pick: Keith Mitchell

Here is most of the information you need to make better picks than I did. Note that the chart below does not include results for Scott Piercy because I whiffed on including them initially and the process of editing that chart once it hits the website is harder than you can possibly imagine for a man of my advanced age. Anyway, Piercy's last five results were T10, T20, T55, DNP and DNP.
