I'm always under the gun for the Dell Match Play preview because of the damn Wednesday start but that's alright because it's kind of a crap shoot anyway so less is more when it comes to this particular analysis (and always the case when it comes to FGR analysis). Actually, in light of last week's abbreviated preview that produced Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson, we're going to continue riding that lazy off the cuff formula into Austin this week (you know, like a donkey).
The good news is that DraftKings has decided to grace us with a game after inexplicably glossing over this event in the past. Not so sure about their scoring system based on holes won, lost and tied but it's better than nothing. God forbid I just watch the tournament for its sheer entertainment value without at least a one in a hundred shot to win twenty-five bucks.
One thing we can say with confidence is that Austin Country Club favors the bombers. Since the tournament moved there in 2016, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day have won it with Jon Rahm and Louis Oosthuizen finishing second. All four of those guys can crush it. Even Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson had success there last year when they were floundering just about everywhere else. With that in mind, I'm digging the long ball this week plus the usual grinders like Paul Casey and Zach Johnson. (You gotta believe that playing Zach Johnson in match play is about as much fun as spreading mulch with a bourbon hangover).
Below are the top ten DraftKings values and I've got each of these guys winning their respective group. I relegated the FGR picks to win the other six groups to this footnote* and, if I can overcome my vast technological incompetence, I will post a completed bracket within the hour as I enjoy my third cup of "First Day Back at Work . . . Someone Please Fucking Shoot Me" coffee.
The One and Done Pick: Jon Rahm
The Sleeper Pick: Xander Schauffele
The DraftKings Top Ten Values
Footnote
* The other six group winners: Dustin Johnson (Group 1), Francesco Molinari (Group 2), Patrick Reed (Group 4), Patrick Cantlay (Group 5), Alex Noren (Group 13) and Gary Woodland (Group 15).
