Hayride to Hell

Time for the FGR fall tradition of recycling this post for the poor saps who still have to endure the October hellscape that I am about to describe. Inevitably it coincides with a multi-day fall bender and which results in me going AWOL from my tournament preview obligations. This is an enhanced version of the original made better by the passage of time and the added layers of angst, irritation and bitterness that go along with it.

Being a parent of young kids presents an ongoing dilemma that causes you to split your time between wishing that the low maintenance versions of them will never grow-up and counting the days when you no longer have to deal with the high maintenance bullshit that goes with the job. First it's diapers which is followed by teething, the terrible twos, car seats, homework, puberty, boyfriends/girlfriends, college applications and finally that awkward conversation that begins with "we're selling the house so you're going to have to find somewhere else to live."* Along the way, you also have the isolated parenting nut-shots like trips to the emergency room, car accidents, arrests, etc. (For the record, I was never technically arrested though I often found myself amongst people who were. The ability to portray innocence when obviously guilty would definitely be my mutant X-Men power).

And then you have the subtle self-inflicted annoyances that we foist upon ourselves in an effort to create Facebook moments. The most obvious example would probably be the attempt to take your toddlers to a sporting event and then spending three hours plying them with food and drinks to keep them interested. (Of course this is a Catch-22 as that means copious amounts of sugar which only serves to make them more distracted which means more food, more distraction, more food, more dist . . . fuck it let's just go).

One of the greatest testaments to my own obliviousness and stupidity was thinking that my kids could sit through an entire football game when I can't even sit through an entire football game. Inevitably in that situation, you start rooting for a moving clock more than you root for the home team and every timeout feels like an eternity. At least when you take your kids to a baseball game, you can just wait for the end of an inning when the players run off the field and tell them it's over.

I'm not talking about just any  bathhouse
in Budapest. I'm talking about the actual
swill hole you see in this picture.
But none of those experiences compare to the blunt force trauma to the head that is the Halloween trip to the pumpkin farm. If you have yet to experience this, brace yourself for hell on a hayride and, if you've been through it already, prepare to commiserate. Allow me to paint the picture and I will preface this by saying that, of all the settings this world has to offer, the traditional farm ranks near the bottom for me right next to a few other random venues in which I have found myself like a bathhouse in Budapest and a sightseeing boat in Mexico.**

So how do you get yourself into this predicament? Well, first you find yourself a farm. If you're lucky, you find one owned by a rich stock broker who always wanted to be a farmer but then realized how much work that takes so he keeps the dream alive by bringing in some borderline carnies once a year to run a little Halloween gig. If that's the case, your kids will get to pet farm animals that don't look like they've been on a hunger strike in between being mauled by coyotes and the corn maze might actually be made of real live growing corn. In this scenario, your greatest fears are mad cow disease, impalement on some kind of Chuck Norris style protruding corn stalk/death trap or your wife deciding she wants to decorate the entire goddamn porch with gourds at ten bucks a pop. If we call this Scenario One, let's just say that the worst case version of Scenario One is ten times better than the best case version of Scenario Two. Write that down.

FUCKING GOURDS!!!
In Scenario Two you find yourself at a farm in the middle of a more populated area. (I'm going to assume these exist anywhere urban sprawl has encroached on what used to be farmland - like the suburbs of Baltimore). Here you'll find a "maze" made of two foot high hay bales and you'll pay three bucks for your kid to make one left turn and then climb over them because hopefully your kid's not an idiot. With the exception of your departure, that will be the highlight of your visit because it's a steady decline from there.

Next you'll wander over to the petting zoo to spend ten minutes waiting for the goat who looks like he's been living off of crabgrass and Marlboro Lights for the last six months to snap your kids left index finger off. After briefly interacting with something that is either a really mangy sheep or a really ugly poodle, you'll take the whole family for a lengthy Purell decontamination shower (if you've seen Silkwood,*** this will seem familiar). By now you've worked-up a healthy thirst so you grab some dixie cups full of apple cider and deep down you hope it's been over fermented enough to get you drunk or, in a perfect world, kill you instantly.

And finally, just when you're high as a kite on apple moonshine and Halloween spirit, it's time for the main attraction - the hayride. This entails standing in line for half an hour waiting your turn to get towed around by a John Deere tractor because what's more fun than having your spine bounced out of alignment while diesel fumes are pumped into your lungs from three feet away? I'm pretty sure it's called a hayride because "Hey, this sucks!"

Forty-five minutes later and you're pulling a wagon full of pumpkins and fucking gourds through a checkout line. At the register, you get suckered into buying a $9.00 jug of apple cider that the "farmer" bought at the grocery store that morning for $2.75 because you have no fight left in you at that point. By the time you load the pumpkins and the fucking gourds in the trunk, you are a broken, nauseous, shell of a man. The next day you will be hungover. Not so much from the apple moonshine but from the experience that will have drained you like a night of binge drinking without the benefit of erasing your memory of it. Not to mention, the fucking gourds will be all over the damn house to remind you.

Depending on how many kids you have and your threshold for misery, this experience can repeat itself anywhere from about five to ten times. Then one day you wake-up on a Sunday in October feeling that familiar sense of dread as you wait for the announcement that it's time to go the pumpkin farm but that announcement never comes and it is at that moment that you know your debt to the pagan gods has been paid in full . . . and you are thankful . . . and you weep with joy.

Footnotes

Looks like I'm taking the bus.
Wait, the bus is free right?
* My personal version of this is slightly different in that it involved my dad waking me up at 11:00 a.m. on a Tuesday to tell me he was selling "my" car. In a rare moment of twenty-two year old restraint, I did not say what immediately came to mind which was "then how in the hell am I supposed to get to the golf course?" I called his bluff by stretching my unemployment deep into the fall and then it turned-out he wasn't bluffing, just slow-playing because one morning I looked out the window and someone else was driving away in "my" car. All I needed to complete the scene was a pizza and a dress in a dry-cleaning bag.

** Boarded that sucker for all of 30 seconds before saying "nope" and abandoning ship right back down the gangplank.

*** Silkwood is a movie starring Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher about people who are contaminated with nuclear stuff. It's actually less uplifting than it sounds. Here is one of the naked shower scenes a/k/a the worst Pornhub clip ever.

The Ryder Cup Preview

I'm going to meander into blasphemous territory here and stakeout the position that, from a purely entertainment standpoint, the Ryder Cup is every bit as strong, if not stronger than The Masters (dodges heaven sent 2-iron stinger from Bobby Jones). I mean nothing compares to that feeling of Masters week . . the first time you tune-in for live golf on Thursday, moving day and the back nine on Sunday but consider this about the Ryder Cup:
  • When the first groups step on the tee tomorrow morning, before they even stick a tee in the ground it is fucking ON like maybe no other sporting event in the world. There is no easing into the game with a kick-off, first pitch or jump ball. It's Hagler v. Hearns right out of the gate and it doesn't stop until someone taps-out on Sunday.
  • The crowd is vicious and they're expected to be. Players from both teams can either feed off it (Ian Poulter and Patrick Reed) or be crushed by it (Hunter Mahan and Webb Simpson). It will be interesting to see what Italian flavor is added this year. Hopefully we get at least one "vattela a pigliare in culo" ("go take it up your ass") or vaffanculo a chi t'e morto" ("go fuck the souls of your dead family members" . . . ouch).
  • For three days, the best golfers in the world get to openly hate each other. Imagine how liberating it must feel to not only display your feelings about Reed and Poulter, but to be celebrated for it.

TWEET OF THE WEEK

Quick golf break to acknowledge the passing of Baltimore Oriole legend and arguably one of the most loved athletes in the history of any sport, Brooks Robinson. I'm going with a vintage highlight here but, if you are a Brooks fan, I would also recommend you devote four minutes of your time to this tribute by Jim Palmer. The man was silky.

GOLF ANALYSIS

There are is all kinds of random shit you can bet on this week from whether there will be a hole-in-one to which player will hit the first shot for each team. Seeing as how we've dragged this preview past the 11th hour, we are going to keep it simple and focus on (a) best individual performances, (b) Sunday line-up strategy, and of course, (c) the overall winner. Let's do it.

Top U.S.A. Point Scorer

Justin Thomas +1100 and Xander Schauffele +600

Playing the odds here with two guys who should get five matches. Unless Zach Johnson is a fool and I don't think he is, the Justin Thomas - Jordan Spieth team will get the call four times or until they show they aren't worthy. Then it comes down to which one of those two you think has a better shot at winning his singles match and I'm going with the guy who has everything to prove. Slight nod to J.T. over Spieth.

Meanwhile, you can pair Xander Schauffele with just about anybody in either format but I see him and Collin Morikawa as a wrecking ball for at least two matches and then maybe he gets one or two with say Max Homa or Patrick Cantlay. That feels like at least 2.5 points plus a singles win.

Top European Point Scorer

Shane Lowry +1500 and
Tyrell Hatton +750

Applying the same theory here as I'm almost certain Tyrrell Hatton will play five times. Shane Lowry isn't quite a lock for that but, when you consider his odds along with the guys behind him on the depth chart, he should get out at least four times. Don't worry, I checked the weather in Rome and it should be suitable if not ideal for a burly Irish guy.

First U.S.A. Player Out on Sunday

Justin Thomas +800 and Rickie Fowler +1400

Coach Johnson is going to go with a guy who will embrace the role of tone setter and that points directly at Thomas. He could also go the inspirational route and, if Rickie Fowler shows anything on Friday and Saturday, that could make him the leadoff man on Sunday but J.T. feels like a lock.

Last U.S.A. Player Out on Sunday

Collin Morikawa +900

I want the guy who's already shown he's a steely eyed mutherfucker down the stretch of a major and Morikawa's done that twice. The only reason you wouldn't put him in this spot is if you had a big lead going into Sunday and you wanted to front load the lineup to step on their throats. In that case, I could see Brian Harman in this spot but his odds are lame at +450.

First European Player Out on Sunday

Tyrrell Hatton +1100 and Shane Lowry +1800

I get why Rory McIlroy's odds are so short (+135) because he checks both the tone setter and inspiration boxes but, if you think Luke Donald might look elsewhere, both Hatton and Lowry check those boxes too.

Last European Player Out on Sunday

Shane Lowry +800 and Justin Rose +800

This was a process of elimination based again on the theory that it's relatively close going into Sunday. You're not saving Rory or Jon Rahm for this spot but you're also not dropping Sepp Straka or Ludvig Aberg into that potential pressure cooker. I'll take one of the second tier guys with both Ryder Cup experience and a bit of swagger. In a perfect world this comes down to the final match on Sunday and I get this right so we see Morikawa duel Lowry or Rose for the Cup.

Overall Winner

I've watched all of the montages on the Golf Channel about how the U.S. hasn't won on European soil since 1993 and hasn't really come close in the last 25 years and it all just makes me that much more convinced that this is the year that all changes but it's not just because the Americans are due. This is a complete mismatch.

In the past, the Euros would roll-in with a strong top tier like they do this year with Rory, Rahm and Viktor Hovland but just below that they would have a huge advantage with Ryder Cup assassins like Poulter, Sergio Garcia and Francesco Molinari along with solid contributors like Henrik Stenson, Paul Casey and Graeme McDowell. Now you've got Lowry, Rose, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood in those roles and I'm sorry but those four guys aren't scaring anybody in 2023.

Compare that to the American roster that goes twelve deep and the two guys at the bottom are the defending U.S. Open and British Open champions. Is that something you might be interested in? Sure you could see Rickie Fowler, Sam Burns or one or two other players struggle but you only really need eight or nine guys to play well in order to win and I can't see more than four players on that roster having a bad weekend.

The only other way to lose would be for Captain Johnson to get all squirrely with his pairings but, as noted above, I don't think he's a fool and he has the luxury of rolling out Thomas-Spieth, Schauffele-Morikawa, Scheffler-Burns, Cantlay-Koepka with Fowler and Homa who can play with anyone who needs a break. And if you don't think that Brian Harman and Wyndham Clark are going to carry some pride onto the course for their limited opportunities, well, um, think again.

USA, USA, USA . . . 16 - 12 which makes the wager . . .

Fantasy Golf: The Fortinet Championship Preview

In the movie The Cooler, William H. Macy plays a guy who radiates such a level of negative energy that a casino actually pays him to stand next to players on winning streaks to kill their mojo. Alec Baldwin plays the casino manager in true over the top Alec Baldwin fashion and Maria Bello is awesome as usual. It's worth a hundred minutes of your time between T.V. show binges but it's dark so don't watch it after a Breaking Bad or Handmaid's Tale or you might find yourself t-boning a Tesla in a Trader Joe's parking lot just to unload.

Anyway, at some point around the first of July, I turned into the opposite of William H. Macy's character and it has continued to linger. (As best as I can tell, it was caused by the conjunction of Venus, Mars and Rickie Fowler's win in Detroit). Just today for example, the Orioles own the best record in the American League, my friend's racehorse won and my boss rolled-up to the office in a Bentley that would make 50 Cent go "hmmm . . . too much." It's like everything I touch turns to gold . . . for someone else.

I'm sure this worm will turn as it always does but we're coming-off a Xander Schauffele runner-up pick at the Tour Championship so the streak is technically still alive. Let's see if we can keep it going this week but first . . .

TWEET OF THE WEEK

I originally wrote this on Monday afternoon before Aaron Rodgers sustained a season-ending injury and I was going to switch it up out of some momentary misplaced feeling of sympathy but then I remembered how much I can't stand him.

My 16 year old daughter and I have been watching Hard Knocks together (because I raised her right) and, as Aaron Rodgers has been doing everything necessary to get his new coaches and teammates to fall for his con, I've made it clear to her what I think of him. Being a relatively new human, she didn't think anything was amiss with his behavior until one scene where he laid-on the "hey check out how cool I am before I stab you in the back" bullshit so thick you could smell it at which point she said, "ok now I see it."

Wish I could remember exactly which scene it was but there were so many of them. Barf.

GOLF ANALYSIS

I have no idea who's going to play well this week. Max Homa is the two-time defending champion but before him it was Stewart Cink, Cameron Champ and Kevin Tway. I defy you to draw a line of logic through those three winners. Believe me I tried.

I'm lightly recommending Homa this week per the Steve Stricker Deere Run Theory but I have to believe that he and Justin Thomas have their minds on Rome at this point. So we're probably looking at a winner from a tier or two down and Sahith Theegala's time is coming so let's make it now.

I'm also getting strong Doug Ghim vibes. He's been on a sneaky solid run since May and guys who were that good in college often find it right around the five year mark on tour. I just made that up after being inspired by a weekend of listening to football announcers say whatever stupid shit popped into their heads. (The winner hands-down was the announcer in the Tulane game who, when they were down by 10 with about 4 minutes left, said, "they just need to get points on this drive" . . . fucking shoot me).

Fantasy Golf: The Tour Championship Preview

Last week I played golf with my 19 year old son and two of his friends and it's probably the closest I've come to getting my ass kicked during a mugging in a dark alley (not really but for the sake of this story we'll go with it). Because I believe these are still the confidence building years and I interpreted the basketball scene from The Great Santini as more of a "how not to parent" guide, I let my son play as an 18 handicap. This despite the fact that he spends more time at the range than Vijay Singh in his prime and hits it about as far . . . when he hits it.

One of the other sandbaggers also got the gift of 18 shots but it was the kid who claimed to be a 14 who was the menace. Look, we all know that the 12-16 handicaps can be the most diabolical because they have an uncanny knack of shooting 78's several times a year which is fine except the odds of it are something like 6,000 to 1. While he didn't shoot 78, he did have about 9 pars and a birdie and, under the ridiculous format I agreed to, that was plenty.

Being ever the entitled private school opportunists, the boys proposed that the three of them play me and my usually reliable 6 handicap three against one straight-up. When I started bogey-bogey-bogey-bogey, it was over faster than Tyson-Spinks and twice as ugly. In related news, I've officially hit that tipping point of the season where hitting a golf ball no longer fascinates me. It got so bad that I traded putters with my son and now mine is in a Memphis dorm room. Frankly, we're both looking forward to the time apart.

TWEET OF THE WEEK

If you asked me to depict my sense of humor in cartoon form . . .

GOLF ANALYSIS

Let the stupid commence. I mean seriously, are we still doing this shit? Maybe the blessed end to this playoff format will rise from the shit pile of the PGA/LIV mash-up but until then, we'll keep trying to gamble on it.

I usually save Xander Schauffele for this week and the reasons are fairly obvious as the 2017 champion has finished top 5 here the last four years and never worse than a T7. It sucks that he's starting seven shots back but my other options are Lucas Glover and Wyndham Clark so this ain't rocket surgery.

From a 6-player pick standpoint, the fundamental question is whether anyone can catch Scottie Scheffler and I think the answer is "yes." Last year twelve players would've beaten him without the handicap including Tom Hoge and J.T. Poston. I know that's a big "would've" but I have to believe that someone from the chasing posse of Viktor Hovland, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Patrick Cantlay and Max Homa are going to make a move on him. My money is literally on McIlroy and Cantlay.

From there we just try to identify the best values in light of the starting positions. Guys like Collin Morikawa and Tyrrell Hatton seem obvious while Russell Henley has been on an underrated heater that has made him a dark horse Ryder Cup pick. At least we have that to look forward to after this dog and pony show.

One and Done Pick: Xander Schauffele

This week we honor the great Robbie Robertson. I know music documentaries can be a tough sell but, if you want one of the best to throw-on in the background while folding your laundry or shucking corn or whatever the fuck you do, I'd highly recommend The Last Waltz directed by Martin Scorsese. I can assure you that it will move from the background to the foreground pretty quickly.

                                 HISTORICAL PERFORMANCE CHART

We've got a lot of fresh faces this year and you know someone from that bottom four is going to over-perform. I threw a blind dart and it landed on Adam Schenk. It was either him or Taylor Moore but, at this point, my faith in "Taylors" is still limited to Swift and ham.
