Fantasy Golf: The CJ Cup Byron Nelson Preview

My affinity for the city of Memphis has been well documented so last weekend was a momentous one as my son was due to graduate from the college that has dragged . . . er . . . delivered me there repeatedly over the last four years. If I was to describe the experience in one word, that word would be "memphian".

The good news started arriving last Tuesday when my Airbnb host messaged me that one of the two houses I had booked a year ago and for which they had been holding a deposit for five months was regrettably unavailable due to a "plumbing issue." The chances that he was lying are roughly 100% with a .01% margin of error but I was left little choice but to book something in a less convenient location and that meant staying in the kind of neighborhood HBO makes TV shows about. At least if you ever need an empty shopping cart, you never have to walk more than a block to find one.

Two days later on our date of departure, we were informed that the second house we had booked a year in advance and for which they were holding a deposit was mysteriously unavailable because there were "people living there." JFC. At least the first guy had the decency to make up a lie. Suffice it to say that there are some shenanigans going on over at Aribnb and they probably need to ban some hosts for committing fraud. Which they won't.

Next up was Southwest Airlines which is one of the few companies I actually like but damn if they can't seem to figure-out this newfangled assigned seating system that no other airline has ever attempted before. Things were so out of whack on our flight that they literally had to assign passengers new seats at the gate and write them on their boarding passes (seriously).

Compounding the chaos was the fact that there were five AAU basketball teams on board so people ended-up in random seats between 6'7" teenagers. Fortunately for everyone involved, I was able to retain my second row window seat. I'm pretty sure the lady at the gate took one look at my resting rage face and chose to make a wise business decision.

Once we arrived, I hauled ass to the rental car counter to get a jump on that process. No description needed for the predictable way that unfolded. All credit to one of the coaches in line with me who recognized the inherent hypocrisy of the company's VIP service name . . . "Fast Break?!?! . . . they should call it goddamn "Slow Break." I of course felt compelled to make a joke about finding the trailer for an open three pointer which went over about as well as you'd expect.

Generally the weekend went well and nobody died (at least nobody with us). I owe a special thank you to the nice lady I met the first morning as I tactically made my way back from Tropical Smoothie Cafe. We crossed paths at the corner of South Belvedere and Monroe and she went our of her way to wish me a joyful "Good Morning!" which she then followed-up with "have a safe weekend." I like to think she was watching over me.

GOLF ANALYSIS

I'm performing this analysis somewhere just east of Bristol, Tennessee with my son doing about 90 m.p.h. in a rental car he's not supposed to be driving with his bulldog Chunk leaning over my shoulder and fogging-up my reading glasses. I literally smell impending greatness.

Scottie Scheffler is absolutely going to win as he now finds himself in the midst of what for him is a biblical drought. His last win was back in January and, if you've seen him interviewed lately, he's not even trying to hide the surliness this has wrought. Look for him to take it out on a weak field and a course where he shot -31 last year.

The one guy who could extend his misery is Si Woo Kim who is playing some of the best golf of his career and hasn't posted a win in over three years. He finished T2 here in 2023 and has been top 15 the last two years. He is by far the most logical pick to win after Scheffler so he will therefore finish T46.

Sungjae Im and Max Greyserman are two guys coming back into form with odds that have not caught up to their potential. I like their top ten prospects along with a good showing from Blades Brown who has been racking-up high finishes on both the PGA and Korn Ferry Tours since a 3rd place finish at the Puerto Rico Open. Chunk just farted in his sleep. I'm going to take that as a good omen.
