After watching Colin Morikawa hit one of the greatest shots of all-time to effectively seal his first major championship victory, I hopped in the car for a quick 1,100+ mile drive in a south westerly direction to drop my son off at college. In yet another great irony of 2020, we drove because of COVID-19, however, the places we drove through showed almost no signs of COVID-19. I mean you saw the occasional mask barely covering the upper lip with no shot at reaching the nose but not much other than that. I guess an abundance of mega churches and having loan sharks in gas stations scares the virus away.
Anyway, we arrived sometime Monday afternoon and I've been wandering around in a haze of humidity and exhaustion ever since. This is me sort of apologizing for the tardiness of this week's post which I am now writing outside on a patio that is hotter than my coffee because there is no desk in our room and I must have certain writing conditions to generate this level of content. Alas my fucking agent forgot to forward the Green Room requirements (again) so I didn't get my lightly salted almonds or cherry Pop-Tarts either. The adversity, however, only makes me stronger.
But I digress. We'll get to the part where I try to continue my somewhat successful forecasting run into a fourth week momentarily but first, this . . .
TWEET OF THE WEEK
Every week Rex Chapman finds us an even better metaphor for 2020.
Well I told you last week that I didn't see Collin Morikawa straying far from the top five and that D.J. was either going to contend or miss the cut by seven shots so you're welcome. I have no explanation for Brooks Koepka's Sunday fade other than his health was bothering him and by that I mean he just didn't feel like winning that day. I have no idea why he's in the field this week but we won't be looking in his direction.
I actually had a dream or a fleeting thought this morning that Joaquin Niemann was going to win. You know one of those random things that runs through your head when you're sleeping in a strange place, you don't really know what time it is and, to a certain extent, have no idea why you're even there. Anyway, I'm completely ignoring that and picking Brendon Todd instead based on (a) his recent play and (b) his sheer animal magnetism. I can ignore it no longer.
This is the Wyndham Championship which means that you are by law required to include Webb Simpson and Brandt Snedeker in your gambling plans. Of course by law I will not be able to include them in mine because the southern state in which I am currently perspiring prohibits fantasy sports gambling while allowing casinos, the lottery and voodoo. Seems logical.
Harold Varner, III and Bud Cauley showed well last week so we'll give them a shot and, in the age of the recent college guy, let's see if Talor Gooch can step out of the massive shadows cast by Morikawa, Matthew Wolff and Viktor Hovland to at least fill that Saturday Night Fever role of the 4th guy who drives around claiming he couldn't find the fight when he just dropped his three friends off at the fight. "Hey Waze . . . where's the fight?!?" That reference made absolutely no sense and I'm either starting to hallucinate or a Priangan sheep really just walked up to me and asked for directions to Chipotle. Time to wrap this up.
One and Done Pick: Brendon Todd
Other Guy I'd Pick: Webb Simpson
Sleeper Pick: Zach Johnson
DraftKings Top Ten Values
We have a limited historical performance chart this week because we've got a bunch of random ferreners who decided to hang around after the PGA Championship and most of them have never played here. Not suggesting that I would ever do this but it might be a good time for the first guy on the alternate list to comment in the vicinity of a tournament official that "Player X doesn't look so good and sure has been coughing a lot." That's terrible. Forget I wrote that. My new best friend and I are going to get a burrito bowl. His name is Steve.
