The FGR's four week stretch since golf resumed has been an epic disaster on the level of, um . . . shit. Anyone got a good current topical example of an epic disaster? Anyone? Fauci? Anyone? No? OK. Anyway, last week's preview has to be rock bottom (please) as I actually considered and then proceeded to type this incredibly stupid sequence of words, "Let's start with who I'm not picking and that's the three favorites Bryson DeChambeau, Webb Simpson and Tyrrell Hatton." They ended-up finishing 1st, T4th and T8th. Ahem.
I'm in a random league that one of you out there suckered me into joining where I get to pick three players a week and sub one after the second round. Twenty-Eight teams ignored my advice and picked DeChambeau while I ended-up dropping Patrick Reed after a missed cut and adding Matthew Wolff only to watch him give the tournament away on the Sunday front nine. Suffice it to say that I finished 40th - just ahead of two teams called "Beerahole" and "Ronstadt's Biggest Fan" (apparently I'm in a league with myself and Don Henley).
But you usually get what you deserve when you pick Patrick Reed, the olive loaf of the deli counter. It's like cutting-off a gypsy in traffic and finding yourself on the wrong end of a mild curse. The good thing is that it only lasts through the weekend as you lament all of the more likeable players who actually made the cut.
So the theme of this week is reclamation. Or rejuvenation. Or recreation. Or redemption. Or some shit like that. But first, this . . .
TWEET OF THE WEEK
Can't quite put my finger on why this from The Onion struck me as particularly funny . . .
GOLF ANALYSIS FOR THE INEXPLICABLY FAITHFUL
If I have this right, the PGA Tour is playing two events in a row on the same golf course. Hard to decipher from the schedule because they list this week's as "Muirfield Golf Club" and next week's as "Muirfield Village GC" but I have it on good authority from some of the best people that they are in fact one in the same. So that means we have some solid historical performance data on this track and next week we'll have even more. Neat.
In an effort to right the ship, we're going almost completely chalk with Patrick Cantlay and Justin Rose at the top. Collin Morikawa is a bit of a stretch because he's never played a tournament here before but Matthew Wolff had only played Detroit Golf Club once and missed the cut and that didn't seem to bother him last week. Besides, Morikawa just took a rare week off so he should be ready to roll but if you're not comfortable picking essentially a rookie, then save yourself a few nickels and drop down to Marc Leishman or the expert on stretching a dollar himself, Matt Kuchar.
The middle tier includes a lot of all or nothing guys like Phil Mickelson, Jason Day and Louis Oosthuizen but I can't afford to gamble that aggressively this week because my reputation is at stake! (Just making sure you're paying attention). I need to earn my way back so I'm going with three safer options in Ben An, Kevin Streelman and Joel Dahmen who will get you where you need to go even if it feels like you listened to the Bridge on Sirius the whole way there . . . "and that was Bread with their hit Everything I Own which will definitely be blaring from the speakers that accompany the four horsemen of the apocalypse."
Jason Dufner, Keegan Bradley and Charl Schwartzel all received strong consideration for the bottom three based on their past success here but I'm not feeling any of them. Instead it's the firm of Grillo, Stanley and Holmes. Emiliano has been really consistent at Murifield Village GC LLC BYOB and Stanley has shown that when he's on, he can tear it up on this track. As for J.B. Holmes, I feel like I blow him off for no good reason and he always makes me pay at places he clearly feels comfortable like Muirfield, Riviera and Torrey Pines. Well that's not happening during reinvention week. No sir.
One and Done Pick: Justin Rose
Other Guy I'd Pick: Patrick Cantlay
Sleeper Pick: J.B. Holmes
DraftKings Top Ten Values
Just a reminder on the Historical Performance Chart that it only includes players priced at about $7,400+ and longer shots who warrant a look based on their recent play or past record at the host course. If you want to take Chez Reavie based on his one missed cut here in the last five years, that's your prerogative but I can't and won't condone it.
