And then depression set-in. Yeah we've still got the FedEx Cup and the official start of the 2019 season where Brendan Steele will win the tournament that becomes the answer to the question "how does Brendan Steele get into all of the majors?" But the fact is that it's like 973 days until the Masters so that's 973 days of passive golf watching with a brief injection of excitement for the Ryder Cup. Don't get me wrong. I'll be watching it all but it will be with the same level of interest I have in one of my kid's soccer games when they're not in the game.
To make matters a bit worse we go right from the final major into a third tier event where Webb Simpson is your high dollar guy and you've got to invest $9,000+ for the likes of Ryan Moore, Russell Henley and Daniel Berger who has had one top ten this year. One. If this field was any less inspiring, it would be coaching the Cleveland Browns.
I guess you've got to pick Webb Simpson based on his stellar track record (see below) which also includes a win in 2011 when he out-dueled Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey in a real life David Sims/Roy McAvoy match-up.* Beyond that it gets a bit dicey. We have the training room triumvirate of Matsuyama, Stenson and Snedeker - one of whom will finish top ten while the other two limp along on a steady diet of Advil and Ben Gay. I like Shane Lowry because he's in one of his grooves and he played well here last year. I also just like Shane Lowry because he's Irish and seems a bit jolly.
As for bargains, it's a total crapshoot. I'd be more confident buying a nose hair trimmer at a yard sale because this tournament has a history of complete randomness. I hope Richy Werenski does well though because the one season I watched The Big Break on the Golf Channel he won so I feel like we're friends.
The One and Done Pick: Shane Lowry
Other Guy I'd Pick: Webb Simpson
Sleeper Pick: Ricky Barnes
The DraftKings Top Ten Values
And here are those ten guys plus twenty more guys you may want to consider along with how they've played Sedgefield CC over the past five years. As always, the answer is in there somewhere.

I was always impressed with how they made it all about the golf. |

Footnote
* Back when it happened, I wrote about it thusly:
James Frederick “Webb” Simpson was a three time All American at Wake Forest and a member of the 2007 Walker Cup team. According to his Wikipedia page, “he won several prestigious amateur tournaments.” Tommy Gainey attended Central Carolina Technical College and worked on an assembly line wrapping insulation around hot water heaters. According to his Wikipedia page, “he has won four events on the eGolf Tarheel Tour.” I’d like to think that Simpson called Gainey “Thomas” all day (“nice putt Thomas”) and Gainey was muttering “fucking pretty boy."
