Fantasy Golf: The Wyndham Championship Preview

Welcome to the Death Valley week of sports viewing as we sit here post Wimbledon and the British Open but pre football season. We're basically Pablo Escobar sitting forlorn on the swing only we're holding a remote while mindlessly clicking between some kind of Club Copa Cabana exhibition soccer tournament and WNBA games with no Caitlyn Clark which is like watching Van Halen without David Lee Roth (and please don't come at me with Sammy Hagar, just don't). 

The other night I actually landed on polo for about ten minutes. It was right about the time that I found myself fascinated by the fact that polo ponies can hit speeds of 35 m.p.h. that I thought "what in the wide world of fuck am I watching?" I did take some solace in the fact that ESPN had Chris Fowler on the call. Misery does love company.

By the time most of you read this, we'll be twenty-four days from the start of college football and over a month away from the first NFL kickoff. I could recommend some shows to hold you over but, if you're like me, they've now all just blended together into a British spy/mob casserole where you can barely tell the difference between the husband in Black Doves and the king from the dragon show who plays the son in Mobland. For all I know they're the same fucking guy. Where's Reacher when we need him?!?   

GOLF ANALYSIS

We've got basically the same lousy field this year that we had in 2024 other than Matt Fitzpatrick tagging-in for Shane Lowry. I can't understand why the world's best  players wouldn't want to play a meaningless tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina during the first week of August but I tend to be naive like that.

We see Ben Griffin stepping into the role vacated by Webb Simpson of the American player who owns this track (with all due respect to Kevin Kisner who we cover below). It otherwise tends to be an international affair with Aaron Rai, Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim posting wins and Sungjae Im often landing in the top ten. 

The most valuable piece of information we can offer this week, however, is that we are not picking Max Greyserman despite the fact that he finished runner-up here in 2024. Note for the record and your own financial benefit that the FGR has a long and storied history of bailing on promising players right before they break through. As always, you're welcome.

This week's chart honors Ian Baker-Finch who recently announced his retirement from calling golf. Finchy was never going to provoke a lot of deep thinking by the viewers because he mostly stated the obvious but at least he did it in a cool Aussie un-Azinger like way and for that we will miss him.
