I'm officially changing the name of the 2018 Canadian Open to British Open 2: The Bomber's Revenge. Call the Twitter and the Instabook and the Snapface and start printing the t-shirts because at least one American masher who got worked by Carnoustie last week is going to kick the merde out of Glen Abbey GC and bring back that vaunted Canadian Open trophy which I'm assuming is a hockey stick made out of bacon. (Seriously though, a hockey stick trophy made-out of bacon would immediately supplant the Stanley Cup as #1).
This week I'm inching my way to the end of the tree limb and recommending Dustin Johnson because (a) he's ranked higher than all of the other golfers in the world, (b) he's finished top ten on this course the last three times he's played it including two runner-ups and (c) he earned himself the weekend off in Scotland so he should be well rested (though I get the feeling that D.J. is always kind of well rested).
The second and third options in no particular order would be Bubba Watson and Tony Finau. One or both of them will absolutely finish in the top ten this week. Unfortunately for me, I've used all of those guys so I need to look a bit further down the list for a viable option and hey look it's Charley Hoffman who is waaaayyyyy overdue for a top ten, especially at a place where he's gone 2nd, T7th and T16th in his last three tries. Not to pump myself up anymore than I already did in The British Open Recap but I have a weird knack of picking Charley in the right spot. It's like we're distantly related. A theory further supported by our striking physical resemblance. (That's a joke. I'm bald and would probably lose a sumo wrestling match to Corey Pavin).
My sleeper pick has to be Hunter Mahan who infamously withdrew from this event after two rounds in 2013 so he could be present for the birth of his baby despite the fact that he was leading the tournament at the time. That inspired me to write a piece called The Mahan Conundrum where I make the case that, if the same circumstances arose at the Masters for a guy trying to win his first major, he should stay and keep playing. I should probably make a marriage joke here but marriage is no laughing matter kids. Or so I learned after writing that. Anyway, Mahan has actually shown a pulse lately with a T34 at the John Deere and a T7 at the Barbasol. My guess is that daddy's had enough quality time with the babies and decided to get his ass to the range so he can pay the bills.
One and Done Pick: Charley Hoffman
Other Guy I'd Pick: Dustin Johnson
Sleeper Pick: Hunter Mahan
The DraftKings Top Ten Values
This will be the fifth time in the last six years that they've played Glen Abbey GC so there is some decent intel to be had in the historical performance chart. I was going to throw-in the 2009 results for good measure but not sure how relevant they would be considering Lee Janzen, Mark Calcevecchia and Anthony Kim finished in the top ten. For you youngsters out there, Kim was the ultimate golfing comet. From 2008 through 2011 he had three wins and three major top tens. Then he had a couple of injuries and poof. Gone. Now he barely plays the game at all. Sometimes I'll think about Anthony Kim as my ball sails over the out of bounds stakes or slides by the hole on a three foot putt and I think maybe one day I'll escape too . . . shit was that out loud?
