One of the eternal questions that has plagued golfers for years is whether or not you should play the event right before a major or hermetically seal yourself in a cocoon for safe-keeping like a wedding dress that's just had all of the Merlot, shrimp cocktail and groomsmen drool stains removed. The case for the former is that you roll-in tournament ready having spent the previous week fine-tuning certain shots under game conditions. The case for the latter is that you tee-off on Thursday fully refreshed and more hungry for action than a longshoreman stepping off the boat in Bangkok Port.
Judging by the light attendance of top players every year at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, the prevailing theory is that you take the week-off to prepare. But those slackers might want to take a closer look because Brooks Koepka won the 2017 U.S. Open after playing in Memphis and Dustin Johnson did the same thing in 2016. The 2015 winner Jordan Spieth didn't play the week before but runner-up DJ did. In 2014, Rickie Fowler, DJ and Koepka did it and then finished T2, T4 and T4 respectively at Pinehurst. In 2013, it was Phil Mickelson and Billy Horschel who played the FedEx before going on to finish T2 and T4 at Merion. This really has nothing to do with who you should pick this week but I wasn't sure how else to start the preview so there you go.
Speaking of this week (man you're smooth), we've actually got a handful of players who really like this TPC course. In addition to the slew of top tens racked-up by DJ, Phil, Koepka and Horschel, DJ won this thing in 2012. After you grab two or three of those studs, you want to be populating your line-ups with singles hitters like 2009 champ Brian Gay and 2014 champ Ben Crane, both of whom come straight out of the mold of the most dominant player in TPC Southwind history - David Toms. Oh and I'm passing on Daniel Berger this week because I like to do stupid contrarian shit purely for the sake of it. That's why I just bought 71 shares of Sears stock. Don't tell me people no longer want to one-stop shop for blenders, lawnmowers and mom jeans. This is America goddammit.
One and Done Pick: Billy Horschel
Other Guy I'd Pick: Brooks Koepka
Sleeper Pick: Ben Crane
DraftKings Top Ten Values
With the exception of Crane and Gay, we're bereft of value plays this week with guys who've had past success. Apparently you have to either be really good to succeed here or be Fabian Gomez in 2015. I'm going to keep riding Abraham Ancer as my bargain pick until he strings four good rounds together or I convince myself that someone else is more likely to pull a top ten out of his ass. He opened with a 65 last week before stumbling around for the next three days. He has the potential. He has the training. He has the experience. He just needs to dig deep and find it. Come on Abraham . . . YOU CAN DO IT!!!

A quick search led me to Miss Memphis Monroe who is apparently in the kitchen remodeling business. |
