Here comes a very thin preview as I lick my wounds from a weekend of extracurriculars that started Saturday night, picked-up major steam at the NCAA Lacrosse quarterfinals on Sunday and then crashed on the beach like a tsunami at Monday night's Caps-Lightning Game 6 (it's good to be the FGR). I now have just over 48 hours before member-guest season starts to reconstruct my body like the A-Team building a tank out of spare parts from a junkyard. It officially kicks-off with a practice round on Thursday afternoon and, if you think I'm planning to squeeze in another 18 that morning, then you know me all to well my friend (did I mention that it's good to be the FGR?).
Fortunately, this tournament basically picks itself. You can almost guarantee that at least four out of Jordan Spieth, Webb Simpson, Jason Dufner, Zach Johnson, Kevin Kisner and Ryan Palmer are going to finish in the top ten based on their consistency at Colonial Country Club. As much as it pains me to say it, Bryson DeChambeau is the real deal and has to be considered a top five threat every time he tees it up. As for the sleepers, I'm going with a couple veterans who've recently been showing signs of life in Nick Watney and Sean O'Hair. As a general unresearched rule, old dudes play well at old courses.
I'm really tempted to pull the trigger on Jordan Spieth for my one and done. In his last three trips to Fort Worth he's got a win and two runner-ups but he just doesn't look right these days. I'm thinking his peak is going to hit somewhere between the U.S. Open and the British Open. Webb Simpson is a popular choice but can he really win twice in a row after a four and half year drought? I say no. I'm narrowing it down to Dufner and ZJ with the coin-flip going Dufner's way partly because he just finished T5th at The Players. Now sit back and watch some grinder like Russell Henley, Charley Hoffman or Adam Hadwin blow all of this analysis out of the water. (I think I missed the analysis part).
The One and Done Pick: Jason Dufner
The Other Guy I'd Pick: Jordan Spieth
Sleeper Pick: Nick Watney
