Fantasy Golf: The BMW Championship Preview

As I start writing this week's preview, I am preparing to embark on a 900+ mile drive from Baltimore to Memphis in the third Volkswagen Jetta I've owned and the first one that one of my two sons hasn't totaled. I will be sharing the driving duties with one of those sons who is returning to college for his junior year and strategically chose a living arrangement just far enough from campus that taking the car was justified.

Anyone who has ever had a car at college knows what a terrible idea it is. At best, you're a responsible driver so your friends expect you to be their chauffeur based on your impeccable qualifications. At worst, you're like one of the three guys who earned themselves a DWI while I sat patiently in the passenger seat waiting for the cops to take them away so I didn't feel guilty about ditching their asses and walking home.

I fell somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. Ironically, my car met its demise on the morning after I made the shrewd decision to abandon it. I was still a bit woozy when I went to get it the next morning so I never saw the lady in the Dodge Duster who would nearly take my door off when I got home and opened it. I was a bit woozier after the door jam knocked me upside the head but I fared better than the car which spent the next three months under a tarp before being hauled away to serve no further purpose beyond spare parts and future writing material.

Live update: It is now 6:03 a.m. local time and we're 200 miles outside of Memphis. After a few hours of fitful sleep on top of a pile of clothes in the backseat, I'm now trying to write as my son weaves through Nashville rush hour traffic at 90 m.p.h. If this is the last thing I ever post, I just want to say that it has been an honor and a privilege.

TWEET OF THE WEEK

This made me feel much better about never taking my kids to museums and a little guilty for making them watch Amadeus a few weeks ago. Or at least the first two hours of it before they revolted and walked-out of the room. "But guys . . . isn't the music fabulous?"

GOLF ANALYSIS

Well I've made a thorough mess of these last few weeks and now find myself in third place but just $200K behind the leader. My remaining options with the best odds are (in order): Hideki Matsuyama, Wyndham Clark, Corey Conners and Aaron Rai. If you just felt a tingle, it was probably my excitement permeating your reading experience.

Corey Conners is out because of the whole Canadian thing and I can't pick Hideki because I'm still too bitter about not picking him last week. (It was pointed out to me the other day that this has become a recurring theme lately). So that leaves Rai who is reputedly one of the nicest guys on tour as evidenced by the way Billy Horschel couldn't keep his hands off him after his recent win, or Clark who gives me distinct Bryson DeChambeau vibes.

The tour returns to Castle Pines this week and this feels like it should be a bombers course due to the 8,000+ yard length but the altitude brings that back to reality and, back when this was a regular stop, winners included Brad Faxon, David Toms and Lee Freakin' Janzen who couldn't hit it 300 yards down the runway at LaGuardia. So what that tells me is that I don't have to pick Wyndham. Haven't ruled it out but, at this stage of the trip, Rai is our man.

The rest of this week's picks are guys I root for (and Wyndham Clark). No one will be bringing any course knowledge advantage and I at least verified that they all arrive in relatively good form. Also, I'm tired, cranky and it's my website so I get to do what I want.

One and Done Pick: Aaron Rai
That's right Aaron. Play like the
goddamn silent British assassin
you were meant to be this week!!!

Other Guy I'd Pick: Viktor Hovland
