Fantasy Golf: The BMW Championship Preview

In the first episode of Season 4 of Cheers, Frasier returns to the bar after being left at the altar in Italy by Diane. He expresses to Sam how the story of his humiliation had spread through the Italian countryside like wildfire and, when Sam suggests that he was imagining that, the following exchange occurs:

Frasier: “Oh, was I? Do you know that in soccer, when a player kicks at the ball, misses and falls down, it's now called a 'Frasier'?”

Sam: “That could be a coincidence.”

Frasier: “If he's knocked-out cold, it's called a 'Frasier Crane'!”

You will find no bigger American fan of Tommy Fleetwood than those of us here at the FGR but at this point, a "Fleetwood" or "Fleetwooding" needs to become part of the golf lexicon for playing roughly 67 holes of world class golf before having a complete out of body meltdown experience.

I mean good grief Tommy. On the par five 16th hole at TPC Southwind (which was the easiest on the course) he had 227 yards for his second shot from the fairway and blew it over the green bouncing it off the grandstand. He then proceeded to one-up that effort by chipping it back off the front before scrambling to make a par. He then turned the 17th hole into a fifteen minute Greek tragedy that resulted in a bogey and the tournament was lost. Again.

He'll eventually find the winner's circle in America but it's probably going to take a six shot lead with five to play, a Zen master caddie and some peyote to do it. In the meantime, he continues to be the most reliable top five bet in golf.

GOLF ANALYSIS

The Tour comes to my backyard this week and no I'm not going but thanks to everyone who asked. Instead I will be dropping FGK3 off for her first year of college in what is sure to be an emotionally charged event. Then again, she inherited the majority of my charming stoicism so the goodbye may involve little more than a fist bump and a silent nod of acknowledgement. I'll have plenty of time for tears on the six hour drive home. . . OK we're back.

The last time they played this thing at Caves Valley, Patrick Cantlay and Bryson DeChambeau shot -27 and it took a six hole playoff to crown Cantlay the winner. It was a pretty stacked leaderboard with Rory, McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm all finishing in the top ten so we should be looking at an entertaining weekend.

The combination of the relatively easy course and the fact that he's only won one out of his last six tournaments which effectively constitutes a drought puts Scottie Scheffler on the Top Ten Values list this week. It wouldn't shock anyone to see him run away with this thing unless he stirs some shit up down at the harbor and winds-up in Central Booking. It's happened to those with far less sketchy reputations.

The FedEx Cup playoffs have a history of second tier players who come-in on a heater and walk away with a ton of cash (see Billy Horschel and Bill Haas). Cameron Young fits that description to a tee after claiming his first PGA Tour win and then following it up with a 5th place finish in Memphis. Caves Valley is an ideal shooting gallery for him to keep the run going.

The rest of the picks are mostly hunch based with the exception of Denny McCarthy who's a local and has probably played Caves more than anyone in the field. He'll also know where all of the good nearby restaurants are. I mean there aren't any but if there were, he'd know where to find them.

    1. Probably but my stupid league ended our season that week. I'll try to be more diligent for those still going.
